Bangladeshi workers in Kirkuk
Kirkuk, Iraq - Before the war with ISIS started, Bangladeshi workers were smuggled in Iraq as cheap labour. In the city of Kirkuk alone, there are around 540 of them that work as garbage collectors.
Companies from Bangladesh take 2000$ to 6000$ from each one to get them into Iraq and find them a job, lying about the wages and living conditions.
Since most of them are unable to pay back the companies that smuggled them into the country, they are forced to give their passport to the employers until they clear their debt.
Without any chance of going back home, the workers live in large compounds together with their fellow countrymen, working up to 13 hours per day, seven days a week for around 400 USD per month.
