Fallujah After Liberation
After a year and 3 months of destruction by the so called Islamic state in Iraq and Levant (ISIL), in November 2015 Sinjar has been recaptured by Kurdish forces after days of heavy airstrikes by US-led coalition forces. Up to this moment IS militants are 5km away from southern Sinjar. From the first coming of IS militants, Sinjar became a victim of their destruction and people of the town have been displaced from their homes, in what the Yazidis are calling to be recognized as a genocide. Kurdish forces like the so called Kurdish Workers’ Party (PKK), Peshmerga, People Protection Units, and Ezidian forces now have full control of Sinjar. The population of Sinjar are eager to come back to their homes but there are still a number of IED’s placed in the houses and roads by IS militants in the city. Kurdish forces need to fully clear the city of IEDs before the community will be able to come back safely. [despite the danger, Few people come back to collect belongings - yet they want to visit their houses and shops to take their necessities if still exist].
People of the city talk about Sinjar as a small Iraq before the destruction of ISIL with Sunni Shia, Yazid, Kursih living in peace.
While for this moment they are fully disappointed of rebuilding their city as how it was before because it is completely destroyed and they find it hard to rebuild the town, for them Sinjar operation is worthy but this does not make them pleased since they still suffer of losing their daughters who have been killed and raped by IS militants.
